First Day

The first day of work was pretty cool. I really liked it. To wake us up, we went outside and did some warm up exercises. We played this game that I never heard of before, ninja slap. We had to put our hands in the middle then on the count of three we jump back, but when you move back you have to strike a pose. Then one person has to hit the other person next to them with their hand and if  you hit that person, that person is out but once you hit that person you have to stay in that pose. If you miss that person you have to stay in that pose and let that person try to hit you back…. there’s lots of games we played in the morning.

We came back inside and Caroline and Graham gave us a tour around the area. Then we went through a fire drill.  There’s a emergency exit in the room that is so cool but its pretty scary. I’m scared of heights so when we went to the roof I was scared to death. When we came down we went to the warehouse. Thats where all the equipment for the trips are kept like the boots, sleeping bags, helmets, a whole bunch of cool stuff. Then when we came back Jesus taught us how to go on g-mail and he set us up with our own accounts. I really had a good time and I can’t wait until all the things we would be working on and I can’t wait to come back to work.

Also, I really like the people I am working with and I get a long with them really well. I’m looking forward in learning and experiencing new things.

Until next time,

This is Candice

The first dayy at work was cool. We played a couple of games two get our dayy started by playin’ ninja slap, yah and big booty with Tiffany, Gio, Candice, and Derrell. Then we met Caroline and Graham. They’re cool people. Then we came back inside and set up our google accounts with Jesus. He taught us how to use our mail to connect with our friends and he also tought us how to use our documents. Then after we finished we went to the warehouse with Craig and we saw the things we are going to wear for tha hikin’ trips. The boots are soo big it was so cool to see all that stuff. We saw book baggs and helmets.  After the the warehouse we had lunch it was cool too. I had a big hero sandwich with honey glazed turkey and cheese and after that we walked jazz down the block and a dog was barkin’. CampInteractive rocks.

Captain’s Log July 1, 2009

It was the first day on the job.  I had no clue who these people were.  It was an uncharted land.  Once i went in, there was no turning back.  At first i was, “who are these people.”  I didn’t want to look clueless, so i did not ask their names.  Fortunately for me, we played a game.  In this game, everyone must say their names.  I took this as an opportunity to learn their names and I did.  Their names are Darrell, Candice, Shamari.  As i got to know them, they  appeared to be more friendly.  I will keep a close eye on them, just to see if there are friendly as they seem.  So throughout the day, we had done multiple tasks.  Not for the faint of heart.  It included a game called “Ninja Slap.”  Ninja Slap is a strange game.  It includes slapping each others hands.  If your hand is slapped, you are disqualified.  It is a unfamiliar task.  Ninja Slap seems to be an alien origin game.  I will have to look more into this game.

Six students from the Summer Youth Employment Program will be joining the CI staff tomorrow, July 1st.

They will be working with CI over the next two months helping with trip planning and organization around the Tech and Trek Center.

They will all be creating blogs on the CI website to document there time and experiences while at CampInteractive.

They will also get to go on the Vermont trip at the end of July where they will be backpacking along with other outdoor activities for ten days.

Be on the lookout for entries from these exceptional students as they begin their time here at CampInteractive!

Diego’s Blog: Again

I’m writing about the hike-a-thon with Campinteractive.

The hike-a-thon was a fundraiser to raise money for New York Inner City Outings so they can continue to provide trips for city kids like us. So we all had to wake up early on a Saturday morning. When I got to CI, I saw some guy that I’ve never met before, but he was only a volunteer named Andrew.

Then we got on the bus to find out that we had to sit next to other kids we didn’t know. Craig told us to try and meet new people. The excellent adventure had begun.

When we arrived at Bear Mountain, we received the privilege of eating bagels, which was a very good time for me. BAGEL= YUMMY YUMMY for my belly!!!!

The hike had begun. It was ok in the beginning, but then we had to start climbing a steep path up to the top of the mountain. I then started to think about food and got distracted. Although, I regained my focus and began to walk. I continued to get thirsty and had to bother my partner to get me water. I think he was getting mad at me because of this, but he didn’t mind.

When we were half way there, I started to see some cars and more people and I became very confused. When we had made it to the top, it was full of the people and I was like” What?!?!?!” It turned out that many people go up to Bear Mountain for fun. This was awful for me because I thought that I would see no people at all. My dreams of isolation in my mind were ruined for the moment.

When we finished eating, we had to walk back down to the bottom of this new evil mountain. Then my feet started to hurt. I thought that the evil mountain had given me blisters and that I was going to die. But I said to my self, ‘ Get your lazy self up and don’t let the evil mountain make you quit ‘. So I walked some more then we made it to the bottom. But I was sad because I found no poor little snakes at all. Once I got home, my feet had a lot of blisters and it hurt, I should have gotten better shoes. My tummy also was hurting a lot as well. But I was able to have time in my isolated world inside my mind. Very relaxing for me during that time. ( I hope there will be more hikes like these).  THE END.

IMG_7438 copyThe Hike Blog Thing

Um yeah, I have to write a blog or whatever it is called. I’ve never written a blog so it may not be good.

Well the hiking trip was to the Weiss Ecology Center. We went on a hike to climb the top of a mountain.  I woke up very early that day (Saturday). Then I had to get on a bus with many people that I did not know. The ones I did know were people that I had met at CampInteractive.

Then when we got there, Craig came up with an idea to scare off the other people that were there as well: dancing. It was an epic win.

Then we went inside a house and I saw some poor little snakes that were in fish tanks that were in water. The snakes looked sad. Then everybody had started to take pictures and messing with the snakes. Then when it was too much for the snakes, the hike had begun.

It was a little cold at first but it got ok. The hike looked ok at first but then I saw mud all over the trail and I was wearing my “white” sneakers and they got all covered up in mud. It then got funny when one girl fell down right in the mud and got her pants all dirty.

Then it got better when a river got in the way. But people ruined my moment when they said it was only a stream.

Once we had gotten through the “river,” as I call it, we had to walk even more until we got to the waterfall. When I saw the waterfall, I was in pure awe. Then we took a break to eat a small snack. Then we had to walk some more.

Craig saw a tick and stopped us for a second to explain what these things were and that if we had found some dog ticks on us to go to the doctor.  After this talk, we walked some more.

Then we saw a cave and we wanted to go in the dark cave. But the cave was closed down because of some white nose fungus stuff in the cave. We were sad because of this news.

Later on the hike, there was a camping spot or something like that. I saw something and thought that it was a memorial spot for some people that were killed or something. But Steven saw two black snakes that had baby eggs. We weren’t allowed to get too close because they were poisonous and we didn’t want anyone to die.

Then I got hungry and it wouldn’t leave at all. To make it worst, my feet started to feel tired because of the long walk that was going on. So I run ahead of the group and found a log.  Then I stopped ad sat down on it and started to eat. But I had to put my food away and I was heartbroken. But then the top of the mountain was getting close and I knew what that meant. Food for me to eat I started to race to get to the top of the mountain.

Then Chris and Paul (I call him” Pablo”) started to try and beat me to the top. Chris had saved up his energy and beat me.

Then when I got there, the view was awesome and I started to eat my sandwich. But Steven ruined my moment and told me that it wasn’t the top of the mountain. So I started to walk up the mountain even though I wanted to fall asleep.

Then when I was walking up the mountain, I almost fell down because of sleep. But I made it to the top of the evil rock that made me hungry.

I ate my food and felt like the king of the world for like a minute. But then I remembered. “How was I going to get back down?” I heard Steven say “skydiving” and I thought that we were going to jump off with parachutes or better a zip line. But we had to walk down.

I almost fell like 15 times on the way down. Then when we got to the bottom, we talked of the time that had happened. Then the trip ended sadly. Hopefully there will be trips like this in the future.

ice-skate1The day was April 20th and we were once again traveling on the D train, this time heading downtown to the  Rockefeller center ice-skating rink. My heart was racing – beating a mile a minute . It was my first time skating, and as i took on the ice, the feat of balancing on skates seemed to be an impossible task. I gripped the railing  and pulled myself along , trying to keep pace with my best friend, and awesome tutor, Brenda. Seeing her skating, I felt compelled to pass her.  After a while , I mustered up the courage to skate on my own. Once I let go and I fell! I got back up, I saw my other best friend and tutor  Melissa hit the ice at full speed. As she got up I almost forgot I fell, and I saw Shaki, Pedro, Kyron, Barbara and Daniel having a speed race.

My experience on the ice skating trip was a great one. I had so much fun. I went on the trip with CampInteractive and all of my friends. I didn’t really ice skate because I thought my fingers were going to get chopped off. I always knew I had greatfirends, but that day I really noticed because even though they stayed by my side and helped me. I had a wonderful time! The food was good. We had cookies, brownies and hot chocolate as a snack and then we had pizza. Everyone clearly had more than 1 slice. We had our own small section where we can just sit, relax, and eat. That’s where I stayed half the time. It was a great experience and if they asked me to go again I would say yes!

Jesus speaking at the MOAM event at the Soho Apple store.

Jesus speaking at the MOAM event at the Soho Apple store.

_mg_4550On April, 3 ,2009 we were heading on the D train to downtown Soho to an Apple store to present  our work on a Macintosh computer .  We showcased trip experiences,  making Web sites , blogging, and other tech. As we got there, we were so excited about speaking – some of us were used to it. As they called my name to speak about my blogging experiences on a Mac, my heart dropped to my stomach. I went to speak and my mouth ran a mile a minute. Originaly my speech took four minutes, but on that stage it took 2 minutes. When the presentations were over, the store owner was kind enough to let us roam around in the store and see the cool gadgets and equipment.  It was really cool – I would live in that store.

CI students sled down Bear Mountain.

CI students sled down Bear Mountain.

On February 7, 2009, CampInteractive hosted its annual ice-skating trip to Bear Mountain. On that trip, a few Catrock Youth Leaders volunteered some of their time to lead the younger CampInteractive students.

To get to Bear Mountain, Kingsbridge International School and CampInteractive, both New York Inner City Outings Agencies, traveled on a coach bus. The ride was long but extremely fun. Once we arrived, the Catrock leaders immediately led group games. Some of the activities were jumping jacks, Oh Baby, and the Woogie.

Right after games, Craig informed the group that they would be doing more fun activities on Bear Mountain. He said the group was going to the zoo, and would be doing some downhill sledding.

The zoo was a very smelly place. It felt colder inside, than outside the zoo. We saw many proud and symbolic animals. We saw coyotes, red foxes, snakes, turtles, fish, black bears, and many birds including hawks and a bald eagle.

Sledding was cool. It was fun for everyone; first-time sledders and the experienced ones. We went down a pretty steep hill, but all the CamInteractive students still maintained pretty good control of the sleds.

Now when we went ice-skating, it felt like one of CI’s best outdoor trips. So many people crashed, but at the same time, all of those people became better skaters. It was a small rink, but it wasn’t that crowded. We videotaped some people showing off their awesome skills. Denise really improved. She stopped crashing by the end of the day. Rosiell started using both legs to push off of. Tiffany’s pink outfit gave sparkle to the ice.

CampInteractive after-school program in full swing.

CampInteractive after-school program in full swing.

I come to CampInteractive because it is fun and I can get away. I made new friends, and even though some of them can be a pain, they are cool
I have a lot more friends here than at my school. It is so fun here in camp. My family loves CampInteractive because I get more help with school work here. There are a lot of field trips at CampInteractive. I cant believe I’m going on them! I am so happy that I can go. CampInteractive will always be here for me.
